Rules for Under 12

Some games and question categories in Odd Ones Out are designed for teenagers and adults — they touch on topics like dating, social media trends, embarrassing moments, and dares. None of this content is appropriate for players under 12, so we filter it out entirely when the Under 12 age is selected.

The following games do not appear in the game hub when Under 12 is active. They contain questions or mechanics that are not suitable for young children. Whose Camera Roll is hidden because it is an online, photo-sharing game where players upload pictures from their own device — content we cannot moderate for this age group.

In Odd Ones Out, players under 12 can only access a set of 10 hand-picked, family-friendly question categories. All other categories are visible but shown with a lock icon and cannot be selected.

In Who's the Imposter, the family-friendly filter is automatically applied and cannot be changed. Trending categories and the Spicy pack are locked and not accessible.

In Closest to the Median and Fake News, the category filter is locked to family-friendly mode. Any adult or featured categories are shown with a lock icon and are inaccessible.

Global matchmaking is completely disabled for Under 12. Global mode pairs a player 1-on-1 with a random stranger anywhere in the world — so it is never available to players under 12, and the option does not appear anywhere in the app for this age group.

Online multiplayer rooms are likewise hidden for Odd Ones Out, Who's the Imposter, and Closest to the Median when Under 12 is active. Because online and global games are hosted and controlled by other players, we cannot guarantee the content stays appropriate — so we disable these features entirely for this age group.

If a player taps a locked category or game, a sheet appears asking "Was it a mistake?" The player can enter their birth year. If they are 12 or older, the app automatically updates their age to the correct bracket, sends an updated analytics event, and unlocks content immediately — no restart needed.

The Spicy Pack (adult content, available as a paid add-on) remains locked regardless of age bracket. It requires a separate purchase.

The selected age bracket is stored on the device only and is not verified against any external database. The Under 12 rules are applied in good faith based on the age entered during onboarding. Parents and guardians are encouraged to complete the onboarding together with their child.

In Under 12 mode the app is local only — everyone plays on one device, in the same room, together. There is no chat, no way for a stranger to contact the player, no friend list, no profile visible to anyone outside the room, and no photo sharing at all. Nothing the child writes or chooses leaves the device to another player.

We do not ask children for personal information. There is no account, no email, no password, no phone number, and no precise location — and Under 12 mode is local play only, so nothing the child writes or picks is sent to strangers online.

What we do hold is the same as for any other player, described in our Privacy Policy: a random user ID, the display name chosen in the app, basic play statistics, gameplay events and errors, and the most recent IP address. Because the display name is stored, a child should never enter their real name — pick a nickname together. There is no advertising and no third-party tracking anywhere in the app.

A parent or guardian can ask us to delete everything behind a device's user ID at any time by emailing oou.inquiries@gmail.com.

The only purchase in the app is the Spicy Pack, which contains adult content and is permanently locked in Under 12 mode — it cannot be bought or unlocked there. All payments run through Apple and require the Apple ID owner's approval. We recommend that parents enable Ask to Buy and restrict in-app purchases under Screen Time in iOS Settings.

A few things worth knowing:

• The age setting can be changed at any time in Settings, including by the child — it is a content filter, not a locked parental control. Use iOS Screen Time if you need a lock.
• Odd Ones Out is a party game played out loud together. Even with family-friendly categories, we recommend playing along the first few times so you know what your child is seeing.
• We review the Under 12 category list regularly, but questions are written by humans — if anything looks wrong to you, tell us and we will change it.
